The Europaradweg R1 is a long-distance cycle route that crosses the European continent. Stretching over 3,500 kilometres from Boulogne-sur-Mer to St Petersburg, it connects the people, nature and culture of nine European countries. The route runs from the Dutch border (Zwillbrock) right across Germany. It passes through the Münsterland region, through Saxony-Anhalt, via Potsdam and Berlin, to the Polish border (Kostrzyn).
The route through the Salzland district combines impressive nature, historical places and varied leisure activities. It starts in the town of Hoym to the west of Aschersleben, leads through the Seeland region via Hecklingen to Staßfurt in the Bodetal valley, on via Hohenerxleben, Neugattersleben and Nienburg, runs along the left bank of the Saale near the Bode tributary to Altenburg, on to Bernburg and then along the River Fuhne via Baalberge, Preußlitz, Cörmigk and Biendorf to Köthen (Anhalt).
Along the way, numerous sights invite you to stop off and make small discoveries: The collegiate church in Frose, the family-friendly leisure area in Seeland with adventure playground, lakeside promenade and riding centre, the town of Staßfurt as well as the impressive castles and the joint castle park of Hohenerxleben and Neugattersleben. You can also visit the Romanesque monastery and castle church of St Mary and St Cyprian in Nienburg, the castle and charming old town of Bernburg (Saale) and the orangery at Biendorf Castle.
In the last two years, nine sections of the European cycle route in the Salzland district have been modernised and extended with the help of funding from the state of Saxony-Anhalt in order to continue to meet the requirements of a supra-regional tourist cycle route.
If you want to discover even more, you can explore further routes in the Salzland district via the R1 European Cycle Route - for example northwards or southwards on the Saaleradweg, along the Fuhne or along the Wipper back westwards.
