Apply for a suspension of compulsory schooling
Service description
School attendance is compulsory for all children and young people living in Saxony-Anhalt. For children who reach the age of 6 by 30 June, compulsory schooling begins in the following school year and ends after 12 years. The statutory 12-year compulsory education requirement is fulfilled by attending a vocational school, unless the pupil continues to attend a general education school.
Compulsory schooling may be suspended under certain circumstances.
Procedure
The procedure varies.
- If you are a mother or father with a child of school age, you must submit an application. If you are still a minor, you will need the consent of your legal guardian to do so.
- If your child is unable to attend school or take part in special needs education for health reasons, you, as a parent or guardian, must submit an application.
- If you are taking part in a vocational preparation programme or an entry-level qualification scheme under Book III of the Social Code, you must let us know.
- If you are taking part in voluntary service under federal or state legislation, you must declare this.
- If you are attending a vocational college for healthcare professions that is not governed by the Saxony-Anhalt Education Act, you must make this known.
- If you are enrolled at a university, you must submit an application. If you are still a minor, you will need the consent of your legal guardian to do so.
- In cases where alternative education or care appears to be in place, this should be reported.

Depending on the circumstances, please contact the school management or the Saxony-Anhalt State Education Authority.
Please contact the school management if you
- are a mother or father and are prevented from looking after your child adequately because you have to attend school,
- are taking part in vocational preparation programmes or an entry-level qualification scheme under Book III of the Social Code,
- take part in voluntary service under provisions of federal or state law,
- attend a vocational college for healthcare professions to which the Saxony-Anhalt Education Act does not apply, or
- In cases where it appears that suitable alternative education or care is available.
Please contact the Saxony-Anhalt State Education Authority if you
- if your child is unable, for health reasons, to attend school or take part in special needs education, or
- You are enrolled at a university.
Prerequisites
Compulsory schooling is suspended if
- if you are a mother or father and attending school prevents you from looking after your child adequately,
- If your child is unable to attend school or take part in special needs education for health reasons,
- you are taking part in vocational preparation programmes or an entry-level qualification scheme under Book III of the Social Code,
- you are taking part in voluntary service under federal or state legislation,
- you are attending a vocational college for healthcare professions to which the Saxony-Anhalt Education Act does not apply,
- you are enrolled at a university or
- In cases where it appears that suitable alternative education or care is available.
Which documents are required?
The documents required vary.
The following documents will be provided if required:
- Proof that you have become parents
- Medical records
- Proof of participation in a vocational preparation programme or an entry-level qualification scheme
- Proof of intended participation in a voluntary service programme
- Proof of attendance at a vocational college for healthcare professions
- Certificate of enrolment
- Proof of other suitable training or supervision
What fees are incurred?
Fees may apply. It depends on the individual case.
What deadlines do I have to observe?
Four weeks before compulsory schooling is due to be suspended, proof must be provided if
- whether the person is to take part in a vocational preparation programme or an entry-level qualification scheme,
- if a child of compulsory school age wishes to take part in voluntary service,
- whether they should attend a vocational college for healthcare professions, or
- alternative training or supervision is to be provided.
