Nature reserves

Nature parks have developed rapidly in Saxony-Anhalt in recent years. In addition to the existing parks – Drömling, Unstrut Triasland and Dübener Heide – the Harz National Park (2006), Fläming (2005) and Unteres Saaletal (2005). The total area covered by nature parks has thus tripled from 138,800 hectares to 428,000 hectares (around 20.6 per cent of the state’s total area).

In nature parks, residents, landowners and users have agreed to promote not only the protection of nature but also the preservation of the cultural landscape and sustainable regional development. This is based on management and development plans drawn up by the nature park’s governing associations.

There are 93 nature parks across the country. In 2005, Germany’s nature parks joined forces with national parks and biosphere reserves to form the umbrella brand ‘National Natural Landscapes’.
