With a value of approximately 10 billion euros, animal feed is the most important agricultural input in Germany. Annual demand for animal feed stands at approximately 66 million tonnes, which is roughly eight times the amount of grain consumed for human consumption.
If the production and use of animal feed are not carried out in a targeted, careful and quality-oriented manner, this results in considerable economic losses and, in some circumstances, harm to consumers and environmental damage. Official monitoring of animal feed throughout all stages of production, processing and distribution (in short: animal feed control) is intended to prevent this whilst at the same time strengthening precautionary consumer protection.Who should I contact?
Responsibility lies with the veterinary authorities of the districts and independent cities. The State Administration Office, Department of Consumer Protection and Veterinary Affairs, exercises technical supervision over the veterinary authorities.
